FOUR REQUIEMS
"Imagine asking a classroom full of children to paint a picture to
the words 'pretty day,' – you will
get as many different paintings
and interpretations as there are
children! The same is true with the
requiem. While the form generally
remains the same, composers
often choose different liturgical
texts, or sometimes mix in poetry to
accompany the traditional Latin texts.
SONOS Music Director Erik
Ochsner has long been inspired
and almost obsessed by the
requiem as a form of dramatic
expression. In fact, he has more
than 140 different requiems on CD.
On June 8, 2012, SONOS Chamber
Orchestra will perform 4 requiems:
2 by from Icelandic composer Jon
Leifs, Johann Christian Bach, and
Swedish composer Fredrik Sixten.
Members of SONOS Chamber Orchestra
were hired to perform at a fundraiser.

REBEL
BAROQUE ENSEMBLE
What did it sound like when
Johann Christian Bach heard his
Dies irae performed back in 1757?
Erik Ochsner invited members of
the REBEL Baroque Ensemble to
come and teach SONOS on how to
perform with "informed performance
practice" techniques. REBEL will not
only coach SONOS, but 5 members
of this amazing ensemble will perform
alongside SONOS in the concert.
The REBEL Baroque Orchestra
first gained wide recognition for its
acclaimed performance of Mozart's
Requiem with Trinity Choir under
the direction of Dr. Owen Burdick,
broadcast nationally over National
Public Radio in September 2001, and
for its annual performances of Handel's
Messiah and the choral works of
Haydn, which had been broadcast live
over WQXR-FM in New York City, as
well as internationally over the internet.
The 8-CD set of the complete sacred
choral works of Haydn was released
in 2009 on the Naxos label. REBEL's
latest disc, Telemann: Sonate à Cinque & Quattro was released on the Dorian/
Sono Luminus label. Recent highlights
have included an appearance at the
prestigious Handel Festpiele Göttingen,
and a residency at the Finnish
festival 'Les Lumières' in Helsinki.
In May 2012 REBEL Baroque
Orchestra performed Bach's Mass
in B minor with the Spire Chamber
Ensemble in Kansas City, MO.

LIVING COMPOSERS
SONOS has a strong history of
working with and evencommissioning lving composers, for example Brian
Grundstrom and James Nyoraku
Schlefer. We are thrilled that Fredrik
Sixten will travel from Sweden
to New York to attend the United
States Premiere of his Requiem! |
"WHY I DONATE"
Long time donor Stuart Morton,
of Indianapolis, Indiana, tells us why
he continues to donate to SONOS.
"While sitting watching Erik
conduct the Fellowship of the
Ring with the St. Louis Symphony
Orchestra last Spring, I realized
the true impact of my donations
to SONOS and the arts in general.
His organization has allowed
many to enjoy live performances
of the music that have become
the signature of our generation." |
SAVE THE DATE

survives. Won't you please help us with
our vital mission. Help us raise $12,000!
NO Donation is TOO small. |
STRAVINSKY IN OUR FUTURE... AND YOURS
A project under discussion:
Stravinsky's Rite of Spring reduced
for 4 pianos and 2 percussionists.
Erik Ochsner would conduct
the concert with live dancers.
IMAGINE the scope of what
we could do with your support! |
 |
"I have to donate BIG $$$
to make it worthwhile." WRONG!! |
 |
"We are a broadly based publicly supported
charity: we accept donations of ALL amounts" |

“They survive just finewithout my
support.” WRONG!! |

THANKS TO YOU

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. On March 23 & 24, SONOS
Music Director Erik Ochsner returned to his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana,
to conduct live-to-projection performances with the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra. This July, Erik will conduct Pirates with the Rochester Philharmonic.
Lord of the Rings Symphony is a symphonic suite of music from all three Lord of
the Rings films. Erik recently led performances of this work in Reykjavik, Iceland,
where there more than 300 performers on stage. He will travel to Shanghai
this summer to perform the same work with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
Imagine a movie screen the width of a symphony orchestra; dialogue and
sound effects as if you were in a movie theater, but the music is performed
live, synchronized to the film: this is Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring:
Live to Projection. Erik conducted performances of the first film in Kaohsiung,
Taiwan, in an outdoor festival with more than 5,000 in the audience, and
the concerts even contained a LIVE fireworks sequence, synchronized to
the film! He travels to Ottawa, Melbourne, Athens and Adelaide still in 2012!
Erik's successes continue to build due to the support, dedication, and
commitment of loyal friends, family, donors, and audience members alike who
believe in SONOS, who believe in Erik. To that we can only say THANK YOU!
An even bigger thanks to those people who have introduced and convinced
their friends to become SONOS audience members and SONOS donors.
"Pirates performance is golden"
"Feats of coordination as exacting as a safely choreographed pirate wordfight"
Indianapolis Star, March 25, 2012
"Live orchestral music and film event captivates at Clowes"
"Ochsner, described in the printed program as "the best and brightest music to film
conductor working today," masterfully led the ISO and members of the chorus as he
followed cues on an electronic screen situated in front... of him on the podium."
